The Common Council of the City of Wagner held a general discussion on extending its zoning powers to three-miles beyond the city limits at its November 16, 2009 meeting.
The city's proposed Comprehensive Plan includes this expansion.
City Attorney Ken Cotton has been in contact with Planning District III in Yankton and they will prepare a basic urban agricultural zoning district modeled after what other South Dakota communities have used when extending zoning regulations beyond city limits.
The draft document will then be reviewed by the Council, questions asked, and then give further consideration to this matter.
In the meantime, the Council directed Cotton to meet with the Charles Mix County Commissioners on November 19, 2009 to discuss the issue further.
"The county is unzoned and we need to look at area surrounding the city limits. The law allows a city to zone up to three miles out. The County Commissioners are willing to set down with us after our zoning model is completed," said Cotton.
Cotton also explained that the City Council is trying to be good stewards for the city and that this expansion is being geared for the unforeseen such as large scale animal feeding operations.
